American academy students’ Nazi salute in Istanbul football game against Jewish students provokes uproar

Uskudar American Academy, a private high school in Istanbul, on Wednesday, expressed regret over a racist act by one of its students in a football match with Ulus Jewish Schools.

The claim surfaced on social media that the Uskudar American Academy football team expressed their joy with “the Hitler salute” when they scored against Ulus Jewish Schools in a football match in Istanbul on Tuesday.

“As Uskudar American Academy, which has raised generations since 1876, we are deeply saddened by the wrong gesture made by one of our players in a football match with Ulus Jewish Schools,” said a statement shared by the American school on Instagram.

“We would like to strongly emphasize that we stand against all kinds of discrimination as part of our institutional and educational philosophy,” it added.

Uskudar American Academy also said the school conveyed its regret to Ulus Jewish Schools and launched an investigation into the incident.

The Turkish Jewish Community also said that they were informed about the incident.

“Our school administration and the Turkish Jewish Community presidency are following the issue seriously with the Uskudar American community and its boards of directors. We have full confidence that they will show the necessary sensitivity and we will continue to share the developments,” it said on Twitter.
